Amway paved the way legally for network marketing. Much like franchising, it was seen as a illegitimate form of business at first. |
Although proven as a legal and ethical business model in all 50 states in the USA, and most of the rest of the world, mlm's reputation is still tarnished. |
The reason is not the strategy or the products being marketed. Most products sold through mlm are excellent. The multilevel strategy conceptually is great. |
From my vantage point, there are 2 inter-related reasons that mlm has had a well earned "shady" past and reputation: |

Read, hang out, and give us your thoughts on Curt's Biz Blog. |
#1. Idiotic marketing strategies. Many companies and industry leaders have promoted aggressive "warm market" strategies such as the "3 foot" rule. |
These methods in an attempt to capitalize on friends and family have ruined relationships, not to mention they don't work long term. (For more information and training regarding marketing methods - ask me for free access to the WorksTeam training site.) |

#2. Abuse of Independent Representatives. This abuse by companies and/or upline leaders includes "front loading:" - encouraging new reps to buy more product than needed to "qualify" for higher pay in the pay plan. |
and just as abusive - sending un/under-trained people into their warm market, or an upline USING the new rep to access his market. |
Unfortunately there are many who still perpetuate very old, ineffective, and unprofessional marketing methods. Be careful! My friend, Ann Sieg, discusses much more about this topic in her free ebook (left column.) |
